Among the United States’ most historical pieces of currency is the Indian Gold Eagle Coin, which was first released by the US Mint in 1908. Each coin possessed a gold content of .12094 troy oz. The Indian Gold Eagle coin continued to be in circulation until 1927, when World War I diminished the value and circulation of gold. Since its discontinuation, it has become increasingly difficult to obtain one of these rare pieces, much less find one in acceptable condition.
Another characteristic that makes this coin so valuable to collectors and investors is its recessed design. While most coins feature raised images, this particular coin’s images have been carved into itself, creating a realistic sense of depth in the design. The images themselves are a tribute to early Americana. A noble Native American warrior appears on the front of the coin in his feathered headdress. His portrait is framed by a border consisting of thirteen stars, the word “Liberty” and the coin’s mintage year. The back of the coin depicts the American bald eagle, stealthily perched on a set of arrows entwined with an olive branch.
