In 1987, the Chinese Gold Panda coin program was still in its early years of release. That year has become one of the most distinctive in the series because it remains the only known date in which the Chinese Mint issued Gold Pandas from two different branch mint facilities.
Each 1987-S 1/10 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin available here comes in a protective plastic flip. These 1/10 oz gold coins are a product of the Shanghai Mint as evidenced by the S mint mark on the reverse. In 1987, the Chinese Mint produced Gold Pandas at both the Shanghai and Shenyang Mints, the only known instance of dual-branch minting for the series.
Giant pandas are instantly recognizable by their striking black-and-white coat pattern, featuring distinctive black patches around their eyes, ears, legs, and shoulders that contrast sharply with their white face, neck, and body. These bears possess a stocky, muscular build with thick fur that insulates them in their cool, mountainous habitat. Adults typically weigh between 220 to 330 pounds and can reach up to six feet in length.
The obverse of the 1987-S Chinese Gold Panda continues the tradition of depicting the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, the main building of the Temple of Heaven Complex in Beijing. This image has been used on the series annually since 1982.
On the reverse of 1987-S 1/10 oz Gold Panda Coins, the 1987 design features a Giant Panda bending near a pond to sip from the water, a one-year-only design unique to this date mark. Pandas are known for their round faces, plump bodies, and seemingly clumsy movements, which give them an endearing appearance that has captivated people worldwide, while their powerful jaw muscles and broad molars are perfectly adapted for crushing tough bamboo stalks.
